The December meeting was also a delightful Christmas break-up. It was reported that The Narooma News had given good coverage to the first Growers' Market in the Central Tilba Hall and that the market was successful with several good produce stalls, local ice cream, local baked goods and the TTTPlus stall. All the stall holders advised that they would be attending the next market. The market is expected to improve as it becomes known in the area and it is to be a weekly event.
Decisions made at the meeting as follows:
Carolyn Wells and Ros Barr will create a presentation pack in January for use by the group.
The bio-diesel bus proposal has been temporarily shelved until a clear direction is established but Peter has offered to help with a submission for further funding for the Dalmeny cycle path. It was suggested that we should look at getting the bike path network extended to Akolele, Wallaga Lake and Bermagui.
Ros & TTT are to join with John Champagne and approach Eurobodalla Shire Council about the growing rabbit problem in the area.
When the Tilba Growers' Market is properly established we agreed we should approach them to contribute to the cost of improved signage.
Next meeting to be Wednesday 14th January at 2.30pm
Present at the November TTTPlus meeting were Peter Essex, Angela Marshall, Carolyn Wells, Stuart Absalom, Mark Lenny, Didi King, Ros Barr, Jo Lewis, Anne Wilson, Peter Doolan and Annie Eldridge. It was noted that the afternoon timing seemed to suit more people and it was decided to keep to the 2.30 time slot generally.
Community Bus objectives were defined as being community centred and taking responsibility for our own transport, reducing oil dependence & cross shire border co-ordination. Relevant aspects being fuel, volunteers, services and obtaining a vehicle.
Food - supporting Annie's initiatives and establishing a weekly Growers' Market in Central Tilba by publicising the first market widely and providing produce where possible. To explore options for orchard pruning and maintainance.
Report on Bega Climate meeting and a proposed community owned solar power station with shares available at $1000 each.
Bermagui Transition Towns meeting at the request of SOBAG to be held tonight 12/11/08

Ros’s letter: Ros presented a draft letter to send to organisation in our local area raising awareness of the group and its aims. It was agreed that we would not follow up on Transition Training as it was felt that a rather lower key less formalised approach would be more suitable in this area. Peter’s Biodiesel Community Bus Peter E reported that he had completed the course on small scale biodiesel production and that a plant of a suitable size would cost about $4000. He has recieved in principal support from the community and from politicians and councillors. The next step is to produce a feasibility study and a business plan. Part of the feasibility study will be to list people who are willing to be part of a roster of drivers for the bus and Jo offered to take responsibility for getting this list together. Peter will discuss other areas of the study with advisors in Bega. The inaugural meeting of the Transition Towns group representing our Triangle communities and Narooma, was held on Friday 20th June 2008, at “Love at First Bite” Central Tilba.
Attended by John Carter, Angela Marshall, Carolyn Wells, Peter Essex, Anne Wilson, Peter Doolan, Jo Lewis, Don Dornan, Ann Montague, and Karen and Gary Hooley.
Transition Towns is a concept and a movement to promote changes in local communities to address the challenges posed by Climate Change and Peak Oil. Peak Oil predicts a deminishing oil supply combined with an increasing demand that forces fuel shortages and rising prices as we are currently seeing now.
Our Transition Town group met to share thoughts and discuss ways of making our community more aware of the changes that are necessary to ensure we succesfully engage these challenges. By increasing local food production, reducing our energy use, and improving the efficiency of our transport. All agreed these were three key areas to focus on Food, Energy and Transport.
Thus, three Project Leaders were nominated to co-ordinate and disseminate information relevant to each of these sectors. They are Gary Hooley - Food , Don Dornan – Energy and Jo Lewis – Transport. If you wish to participate in, or provide information to, the Transition Towns Group for our area, please contact Jo Lewis on Phone: (02) 44737927 or email: rainbird(at)skymesh.com.au .
For further information check out the community website at transition.org.au
The main issue discussed was promotion of local food production in our area, the outcomes summarised in table below. Agreed Strategies to Promote Local Food Production: Strategy | Plan | Action |
|---|
a) Encourage local residents to buy local produce | Article in Narooma News & Triangle Newsletter & Sustain | Peter Doolan & Anne Wilson | b) Provide structured support to local producers by:
i) Co-ordinating production & surplus sharing/sale.
ii) Organising transport to local distribution point.
iii) arrange customers for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) | Mention in articles to media, seek people and ideas.
Put ideas & info on website.
Explore for location, facilities, & timing for distribution (perhaps Farmers Market or Home Delivery Service or Pick-up a Box of Seasonal Veg & Fruit).
Possible locations: - Bazaar in Cobargo (Ray Buckley) - Narooma F&V (Kerry & Shirley) - Tilba Cheese Factory (Erica Dibden) - Bermagui
| Peter Doolan, Anne Wilson & Gary Hooley | c) Identify formerly productive land that is idle and arrange its return to production. | - Discuss with LETS about getting labour involved.
- Arrange an event
- Promote as training event
- Engage trainers (eg: Bill & Ivan) | Carole Broadhead | d) Promote the Euro/BValley "Food Trail" in conjunction with local councils. | Within scope of SCPA activities. | Carole Broadhead to organise via SCPA. | Peter Essex is continuing to follow-up on funding and support for a Local Community Bus. Mentioning that Alex Codina of NSW Premier's Department had responded via email within 24 hours, and indicated a positive interest.
Due to some requests from community members we will hold future meetings at 5:30pm Thurdays about the 3rd week in month.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday 18th September 2008 5:30pm at "The Pink House" 8279 Princes Hwy, Central Tilba, all are welcome.
The meeting welcomed newcomer David from Tilba.
Anne reported that her article was printed in the Narooma News but they did not print the list of local food producers. The Narooma News is considering doing a Transition Towns feature but that would be dependent on advertising by the food producers on the list. The Triangle only received the producers list which they will include in the October edition. Anne and Jo agreed to visit the local wineries and invite them to be on the list of local food & beverage producers.
It was agreed to run a film and information night at the Narooma Kinema and this has been arranged for Monday 20th October. A light supper will be included and John Champagne will introduce the film “The Power of Community”, the cost will be $10.00. The main aim will be to raise awareness and enthusiasm for tackling the twin threats of peak oil and climate change. It was also decided to contact local clubs and organisations in the Narooma area and ask if we could make a presentation to them explaining the Transition Towns concept. Ros to draft a suitable letter.
Peter was unable to attend the meeting but has since advised that the biodiesel community bus proposal is getting a strongly positive response.
Gary advised that this would probably be the last meeting that he and Karen could attend as he is moving house. However he will still be in the catchment area and hopes to keep in touch.
Next meeting 16th October (see events page)
